Teachers are mandated reporters, which means that if they hear or see that a student is in danger, they are required to contact the correct agency to get the child help.

Because educators spend so much time with their students, they are often in a good position to know if they need help. Recently, this huge and important responsibility was put in action when an 11-year-old girl arrived at her Louisiana school with a note from her mom that shocked everyone.

On November 1, the young girl’s mother slipped a note into her backpack that was intended for school officials. It said that the woman was scared and being held against her will.

East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis said that the woman and her daughter had been kept in a family acquaintance’s trailer “for at least a couple of weeks.”

“It’s very alarming when a student shows up with a note asking for help,” he added.

Donald Ray Guy was identified as the man holding them hostage. Police arrived with a warrant and found two of Guy’s relatives with the terrified mother.

Guy has had many run-ins with the law. At the time of his arrest, he had multiple outstanding warrants that police had been unable to serve.

In the past, he would run away from officers at every attempt, but he is now in prison after being found hiding in a closet. Bond has not been set.

The mother is now back together with her brave daughter, whose smart thinking got that note into the right hands. She may have saved their lives.
