What happened to this baby orangutan will make you choke back tears. This little fella was safe in his home when humans attacked it. They were chopping down his forest, clearing it to make way for a plantation for a company to use to make its products. Companies that put money above life.
Now this baby is homeless… and without his fingers.
The 4 month-old orangutan’s fingers were chopped off while workers were chopping down his forest while preparing for an oil palm plantation.
The little guy has been named Sura. He was discovered by a resident of the Tumbang Koling village in East Kotawaringin Regency.
Now, Sura is being nursed back to health by specialists at the Nyaru Menteng Rescue.
Now, Sura needs a full-time babysitter, but he is quickly recovering.
Even though Sura will be okay, the orangutan population is dwindling. 100 years ago, there were an estimated 315,000 orangutans in the wild. Today? There are less than 54,000 in Borneo and only around 6,000 on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Their natural habitats are being destroyed by companies, especially by those making soaps and perfumes. As a proponent of capitalism, there’s nothing wrong with profiting – but at the expense of lives, it’s too far.
